Too cheap to be good, right? Turns out, not exactly. Here is what I actually found after daily use on the road and off it.

What You Are Getting on Paper

The LT-778 runs AM and FM, with FM power selectable between 4W, 20W, and 60W. AM caps out around 15W. Frequency range is 25.615 to 30.105 MHz, and it is programmable. The receiver specs are solid — 0.8uV sensitivity on FM, adjustable squelch, built-in ANL and noise blanker.

It weighs about 1.1 kg and measures roughly 16 x 15 x 5 cm. Compact enough to mount just about anywhere without it getting in the way.

The Good Stuff

Honestly, the FM power is what got me. At 60W, my signal gets out way farther than my old 4W radio ever dreamed of. On a good day with the right band conditions, I have hit contacts 50+ miles away on FM simplex — that is not something you expect from a $100 radio.

AM performance on Channel 19 is clean and reliable. Truckers hear me clearly and I hear them. The clarifier is a nice touch for pulling in stations that are just slightly off frequency.

Setup was dead simple — I had it mounted and on the air within 20 minutes of unboxing. The menu is intuitive, the display is easy to read in daylight and at night, and the mic feels solid. No complaints there.

The noise blanker does a decent job on engine hash, though if you have a really noisy electrical system you might still want an external filter. For most vehicles it handles fine.

The Not-So-Good Stuff

No SSB is the obvious one. If you want USB or LSB, you need to look at the LT-5558B instead. This radio is AM and FM only, and for some users that is a dealbreaker.

There is no built-in SWR meter. You absolutely need to tune your antenna with an external meter before you transmit — do not skip this step, especially at 60W. Run it without proper tuning and you risk damaging the finals.

The 60W FM mode draws some serious current (up to 11A). If your power wiring is not up to snuff, you will notice voltage drops. Make sure your fuse panel and wiring can handle the load before you flip it to high power.

One minor nitpick: the internal speaker is fine, but at full volume in a noisy cab it can get a little harsh. An external speaker helps, but for most people it is not a dealbreaker.

Is It Worth the Money?

For AM/FM-only use, absolutely. The LT-778 punches way above its price point. You get power and features that were only available on radios costing twice as much a few years ago. It is reliable, easy to use, and after six months of daily use, it has not given me a single problem.

If you need SSB, spend the extra money on the LT-5558B — you will not regret it. But if AM and FM are all you use, the LT-778 is one of the best deals going right now.

Rating: 4.7/5 — lost a point for no SSB, but the value is genuinely hard to beat at this price.

👉 Check current price at BestCBRadio.com

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "How much power does the LT-778 have?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "The LT-778 has selectable FM power: 4W, 20W, or 60W.
