Do I need a license to use the UV-K5?

Yes. The UV-K5 is a ham radio that transmits on VHF (144-148MHz) and UHF (400-450MHz). In the US, you'll need a Technician class ham license (or higher) to transmit. Listening is always free on all frequencies.

What bands can the UV-K5 receive?

The UV-K5 receives from 50MHz to 600MHz continuously, covering VHF, UHF, Air Band (108-136MHz AM), FM broadcast (76-108MHz), and more. It's an excellent wideband scanner in addition to a ham radio.

Does the UV-K5 support Air Band monitoring?

Yes. The UV-K5 includes Air Band receive (108-136MHz AM), allowing you to listen to aviation communications. This feature is popular among aviation enthusiasts and pilots in training.

What is the transmit power of the UV-K5?

The UV-K5 delivers up to 5W of transmit power on VHF and UHF bands. Power is switchable between high, medium, and low settings to extend battery life.

Does the UV-K5 have NOAA weather alerts?

Yes. The UV-K5 scans 10 NOAA weather channels and automatically alerts you to severe weather warnings. Essential for outdoor adventures, hiking, and emergency preparedness.

How do I program the UV-K5?

The UV-K5 supports three programming methods: 1) Keyboard direct entry for manual programming, 2) Wireless frequency copy to clone settings from nearby radios without a computer, 3) PC software via USB programming cable (compatible with CHIRP).

What is the battery life of the UV-K5?

The UV-K5 comes with a 1600mAh Li-ion battery pack. Battery life varies by transmit power and usage, but typically provides a full day of moderate use. USB Type-C charging allows easy top-ups from power banks.

Does the UV-K5 support CTCSS/DCS tones?

Yes. The UV-K5 supports CTCSS (50 tones) and DCS (105 codes) for privacy on shared frequencies. These can be set per channel to block unwanted transmissions or access tone-locked repeaters.

What accessories come in the UV-K5 box?

Package includes: UV-K5 radio body, high-gain dual band antenna (SMA-Female), 1600mAh Li-ion battery pack with USB Type-C port, desktop charger (110V-240V), belt clip, earpiece, hand strap, and user manual.

Is the UV-K5 waterproof?

No. The UV-K5 is not waterproof or water-resistant. Keep it protected from rain and moisture. For wet environments, consider using a waterproof bag or case.

What is the difference between ham radio and CB radio?

Ham radio requires a license (Technician class or higher) and allows higher power (up to 5W handheld) on VHF/UHF/HF bands. CB radio requires no license but is limited to 40 channels on 27MHz with 4W max. Ham radio offers greater range, more frequencies, and more features than CB.

Can I use the UV-K5 for FRS or GMRS?

The UV-K5 is a ham radio that transmits on amateur frequencies (144-148MHz / 400-450MHz). It is not certified for FRS or GMRS use. Using it on non-amateur frequencies without the proper license may violate local regulations.
