Yes. The KT-8900 is a GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) radio. In the US, a FCC GMRS license is required to transmit ($35 for 10 years, no exam required). Listening is always free.

The KT-8900 delivers 25W maximum on VHF and 20W maximum on UHF. Power is adjustable for different situations.

What frequencies does the KT-8900 support?

The KT-8900 supports GMRS frequencies (462-467 MHz) and is also compatible with FRS radios. It covers 15 GMRS channels plus 8 repeater channels with full VHF/UHF receive capability.

Does the KT-8900 have CTCSS and DCS tones?

Yes. The KT-8900 supports CTCSS (50 tones), DCS (105 codes), 5-Tone, 2-Tone, DTMF, and ANI. You can set privacy codes per channel to block unwanted transmissions.

How many channels does the KT-8900 have?

The KT-8900 has 200 programmable channels, providing plenty of memory for GMRS channels, repeater offsets, and custom frequencies.

Does the KT-8900 support NOAA weather?

Yes. The KT-8900 features NOAA weather scan and alert. It automatically scans weather band channels and locks onto the strongest signal to alert you of severe weather in your area.

Is an antenna included with the KT-8900?

No. The antenna is not included and must be purchased separately. Do not operate the radio without an antenna connected — this can cause damage to the transmitter.

What comes in the box with the KT-8900?

The standard package includes: KT-8900 radio unit, microphone with control buttons, power cord with inline fuse, mounting bracket with hardware, and user manual.

Can I use the KT-8900 as a base station at home?

Yes. The KT-8900 works as both a mobile unit (12-13.8V DC) and a base station. Simply connect it to a power supply and home antenna for fixed installation.

How do I program the KT-8900?

The KT-8900 is programmed via PC software using a programming cable. Note: Our radio is only compatible with our specific software. Using third-party software may cause damage to the radio.

What is the difference between GMRS and FRS?

GMRS requires an FCC license ($35) and allows higher power (up to 50W for mobile units) with repeater access. FRS is license-free but limited to 2W and no repeater access. The KT-8900 is a GMRS radio compatible with both GMRS and FRS channels.

Is the KT-8900 waterproof?

No. The KT-8900 is not waterproof. It should be installed in a dry interior location protected from rain and water exposure.

The NOAA weather alerts are essential for Arizona monsoon season. Mounting was simple with the included bracket. The radio survives daily vibration and extreme temperatures without issues. I keep emergency supplies for my family and the KT-8900 is now part of our communication plan. The NOAA weather alerts give us advance warning of Pacific Northwest storms. 25W of power means we can reach each other across town if cell towers go down. The radio is simple enough that my kids know how to use it. GMRS requires a license but the exam is easy and the $35 fee is good for 10 years. Peace of mind well worth the investment.

Just got my GMRS license and needed a quality radio without breaking the budget. The KT-8900 was the perfect choice. Setup took 30 minutes and I was on the local repeater immediately. The dual band feature is excellent for monitoring both GMRS and FRS channels simultaneously. Build quality feels durable. My only wish is that it came with a programming cable, but the keyboard programming worked fine for my needs.
